Frome

Packed to the rafters with artisans, historic buildings, beautiful independent shops, and creative people, Frome is a wonderfully vibrant and eventful town. Situated on the eastern edge of the Mendips and just 13 miles from Bath, Frome is a town with a charming historic centre and has a wealth of architectural interest, with over 350 listed buildings. It’s a gorgeous place to visit and explore the boutiques, Frome’s artisan quarter, creative independent shops, and cosy cafes. Hunting Raven is a wonderful independent bookshop where you can find your next read to sit down and relax with, and Bramble & Wild will fulfil your floristry needs! Visit Cheap Street, which has a stream (leat) running down the middle of the street.

The original Somerset market town, there has been a market in Frome since the Domesday Book. Frome hosts regular markets every Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Then on the first Sunday of each month from March to December, ‘The Frome Independent’ comes to town. This mini festival takes over the whole town and attracts thousands of visitors. It brings together the best artisan food and drink, local artists and designers, local produce, plants, flowers, retro, vintage, collectibles, homewares, and street entertainment and is well worth a visit.

The contemporary and performing arts scene is thriving, as well as art and traditional crafts. Visit Black Swan Arts for a studio, shop, and café where you can explore local artists’ workshops and the Silk Mill, a great studio space full of art. For theatre, visit the Merlin Theatre or Ecos Amphitheatre. The not-for-profit social enterprise Cheese & Grain hosts bands throughout the year, as well as flea markets and talks. 

If you fancy a bite to eat, head to Bistro Lotte for an atmospheric French meal (perfect at night), High Pavement Restaurant for tapas, Castello for Indian cuisine, and Archangel for seasonal food. For a more relaxed snack, head to Rye Bakery, Moo and Two, or the River House.
